Gibraltar Cable Car Closed for 2 Years

26 November 2025

The Gibraltar Cable Car has been shut down to undergo a major upgrade that’s expected to take about 2 years. MH Bland (the company that built the original system) will be overseeing the project, continuing the legacy of John G. Gaggero, whose vision brought the cable car to life more than six decades ago.

Once the redevelopment is complete, the new cable car will offer easier access, improved facilities, and a much larger capacity. The aim is to blend the charm of the original attraction with a modern design that’s environmentally conscious and ready to serve visitors for many years to come.

How Can I Get to the Top of the Rock?

Even with the cable car closed, reaching the summit is still very much possible. You can book a private tour with a company like ours, join a public taxi tour from Main Street or the border, or hike up through the Upper Rock Nature Reserve - tickets for the reserve can be purchased at naturereserve.gi.

Choosing a guided tour with us means you won’t have to tackle the steep walk or the long distances between key sights. You’ll travel comfortably in our air-conditioned Mercedes vehicles and explore the Rock with a knowledgeable local guide who can share the stories, history, and character of the place we proudly call home.
